The Way - Original paintings about people, places, animals, rocks, insects, climate, atmosphere and things.
Paintings for your feelings . . . paintings for purchase . . . for your time.
Philip C. Jones
My creative understanding of life comes from a healthy dose of the arts in childhood—the workplace — “roughing it” in nature — inner city living — pew worship — bar worship — and my travel for a couple years in southern Italy.
In my work, I combine ancient fundamental painting techniques with the freedom of a liberal American middle class traveler. I have lived studying life, color, and light and believe I can combine my two-dimensional work with social content to create art on paper with water colors.
In the year 1996, a book influenced my painting - The Way of Chinese Painting, selections from the seventeenth century Mustard Seed Garden Manual of Painting. The Manual is a foundation of constant study for me and how I paint. American art, freedom with color and abstract movement are also within me. In short, I am a blue collar American citizen with an artisan cultural upbringing.
Modern painters whose style I think about and always remember when I am painting are Matisse and Van Gogh. I incorporate the modern freedom of Matisse and Van Gogh painting with the ancient Chinese foundation of painting.
What's New with Marsha's Artist in 2010?
Philip had an art opening at Beaner's Central in March. The opening included a series of seven watercolor paintings. The series title is "The Last Tailor." The series celebrates the labor behind fashion.
Beaner's is a local coffee shop in Duluth, Minnesota that serves great coffee and has live music. The address is: 324 North Central Avenue, Duluth, Minnesota 55807. Here is a link to their website: http://www.beanerscentral.com. Even though Philip's show is over, they support local artists so stop by their shop sometime. I will be posting "The Last Tailor" series soon on our site.
Some of Philip's work was also displayed at the Casa Latte - a really warm and relaxing coffee shop in Hermantown, Minnesota. The Casa Latte is located at 5493 Miller Trunk Highway, Hermantown, MN. The Casa Latte provides local artists room to display and sell their work. Thank you Casa Latte!
